COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team came out flying in its game against South Carolina State, Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena.

The Tigers scored the first eight points, 19 of the first 20, and 32 of the first 39 to lead 32-7 midway through the first half, on their way to a dominant, 98-66 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

“(It was) great to see our guys gel and continue to get better,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said. “I thought we came out early and set the tone, and we played very unselfishly.”

Five players scored in double figures and every Missouri player that played made at least one basket, led by seniors Shawn Phillips, Jr. and Mark Mitchell. Phillips led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Mitchell contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Sebastian Mack and Annor Boateng both had 12 points, while T.O. Barrett added 11 points and five rebounds.

“I thought (more) shots could fall, but they didn’t… we had some wide open misses,” Gates said. “We played a good team game, I thought.”

The victory extended Missouri’s season-opening winning streak to seven in a row. The Tigers are now 7-0, with a chance to move to 8-0 later this week, when they host Cleveland State at Mizzou Arena on Friday night.

That matchup will tip off at 7 p.m., and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

Other big news for Mizzou on Tuesday was the first appearance of 7-foot-5 sophomore Trent Burns, a highly touted recruit who signed with Missouri out of high school in 2024, but missed all of last season and the first six games this season due to injury.

Burns checked in with about nine minutes left in the first half and played 11 minutes, while scoring seven points and adding three rebounds and a blocked shot.

“The whole staff, from top to bottom, from coaches to managers, they’ve been there the whole time through my rehab. Even last year,” Burns said. “So, it took a lot of the pressure off me and I got to just go play.”

Gates added, “we thought the Cleveland State game was going to be the first game, possibly. But in his rehab, he’s just had a great response to practice and post-practice. And obviously, the doctors gave the thumbs up… and he was prepared.”
