CLAYTON, MO — The No. 1-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team was dealt its first loss of the 2023 season, Sunday afternoon, when it fell 2-1 to No. 10 Rochester, in a UAA league game at Francis Olympic Field.

Coming in, not only had the Bears not lost a game this season, they hadn’t allowed any goals either. But both those records went by the wayside as Rochester stormed in to pull off the major upset.

The visitors got goals from Natalie Kocsis and Lauren Blanch to take a 2-0 lead midway through the second half. WashU answered, with a score by Jessica Greven on a penalty kick to pull within one. But that was as close as the Bears would get, as the Yellowjackets held on for their program’s second-ever win against the No. 1 team in the country.

The Bears are now 14-1-1 on the year, with a 4-1-1 UAA record, while Rochester is now 11-0-5 overall and 2-0-4 in conference action.

Prior to the game, WashU honored its eight seniors – Madeline Allburn, Sidney Conner, Kate Flynn, Hailee Fritsche, Jessica Greven, Sarah Neltner, Anna Viscovich and Tyler Wilson.

WashU scored its lone goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Following a penalty in the box, Greven put in a penalty kick – her third of the season – to cut Rochester’s lead to 2-1.

Offensively, the Bears kicked it up a notch in the second half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 9-4. WashU ended with 13 total shots including seven on goal to Rochester’s seven total and five on goal. Conner made three saves in the net.

The Bears close out the regular season on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Chicago on Francis Olympic Field.
