CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team got off to a fast start and never trailed at any point in what proved to be a 69-52 win over crosstown rival Maryville, Tuesday night at Moloney Arena.
The matchup was the third straight road game for UMSL and it allowed the Tritons to improve their record to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Maryville is 1-7 this season and 0-3 in the GLVC.
On Tuesday, UMSL scored the first six points of the game and never lost the lead. Maryville got within a point midway through the first half and again at the beginning of the second half, but the Tritons went on a 16-7 run to go ahead by 10 points midway through the second half.
UMSL would go ahead by as many as 18 points down the stretch, as it closed out its third straight win over the host Saints.
Junior forward Vincent Davis III led all scorers with 18 points, which included making all five shots he took from the floor and eight-of-12 free throws. Davis also had six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Fellow junior Jake Hamilton had 13 points for the Tritons, while senior teammate Blessed Barhayiga came off the bench to add 10 points. Redshirt freshman Taye Moore was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, as he finished with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
UMSL will be back in action on Saturday, December 13, when the Tritons return home for a matchup with Wisconsin-Parkside. Tip off at the Mark Twain Building is scheduled for 3 p.m.
