CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had its seven-game win streak snapped on Thursday, when it lost the first game of a key four-game series to crosstown rival Maryville University at that school’s Weber Field.
UMSL scored the first run of the game, but Maryville did most of the rest, as the Saints banged out 16 hits and scored 14 runs to earn a 14-4 victory.
The loss dropped UMSL’s overall record to 16-10 and 8-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, while Maryville improved to 18-7 and 11-2 in the conference.
Three different Maryville hitters had three hits in the game, led by Dominic Sharp, who also had three RBIs. Teammate Elias Stevens also had three RBIs and hit his GLVC-leading 10th home run of the season.
The Tritons were led by junior centerfielder Braedon Stoakes, who had two hits and scored two runs. Teammates Barrett Rose and Garrett Strenger also had two hits, and Jake Isaacs had a hit and two RBIs.
Starting pitcher RJ Elmore (2-4) took the loss on the mound. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Tritons and Saints will be back in action on Friday, with a doubleheader at Weber Field. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m.
