CHESTERFIELD, MO — Day Two of the Maryville Thanksgiving Classic didn’t go as well as the first for the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team.
On Tuesday, the Tritons led from almost start to finish in a win over Wisconsin-Parkside. But on Wednesday, the almost opposite happened, as UMSL led very early, but then fell behind and could never get back in control in what eventually became a 71-41 loss to No. 17-ranked Northwest Missouri State.
UMSL made two of its first three shots and two free throws to go ahead 8-2 early. But then the Bearcats, who began the season as the No. 1 ranked team in all of NCAA Division II basketball, answered with a 22-5 run to go ahead 24-13 with 5:32 left in the first half.
From that point on, the Tritons never got closer than nine points.
Junior Terrell Kabala led the Tritons with 12 points and teammate Emanuel Prospere added 11, as UMSL fell to 2-4 on the season.
Following the holiday, UMSL will be back in action next week, when it begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play, next Thursday, November 30, with a game against William Jewell.
That game, along with a women’s game between the two schools, will be played at Missouri Baptist due to the UMSL women’s volleyball team hosting the NCAA Midwest Regional next weekend. Tip off for UMSL-William Jewell is 5 p.m. for the women’s game and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
The Tritons’ first official home game will come next Saturday, December 2, when the team will host Rockhurst.
