CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team suffered a pair of tough losses, Friday afternoon, when it traveled to Weber Field to play crosstown rival Maryville University.
The No. 21-ranked Saints defeated the Tritons 13-9 in Game 1 and 5-2 in Game 2.
UMSL got a big day from senior Mitchell Green, who homered in both games, but it wasn’t enough as Maryville’s offense overpowered the Triton pitching staff for the second straight day.
Game 1 – Maryville 13, UMSL 9

The Saints (20-7, 13-2 GLVC) jumped on top with three runs in their half of the first in the opening game. Jack Zebig led off the game for Maryville with a home run to right. Later in the inning, Michael Long hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Dominic Sharp. Jacob Hager drove in the final run of the frame with a single to center to bring in Michael Gould.
UMSL (16-12, 8-7 GLVC) cut into the Saint lead with two runs in the second. Justin Simard drove in Andrew Buescher with the first run with a single up the middle and Jake Isaacs brought home Green as he reached on a fielder’s choice to second.
Maryville came right back with a run in its half of the second as Gould doubled down the left field line to bring home Zebig. The Saints extended their lead to seven with a five-run fourth. Long hit a two-run single to right to make it 6-3 and Hager hit a three-run homer to left center.
The Tritons got three of those runs back in their half of the fifth on Green’s three-run home run to left.
Maryville added four insurance runs in its half of the fifth as Hager hit a bases clearing double to left center and Colin Bergmann singled to drive in Hager.
UMSL wouldn’t go quietly scoring four times in the sixth. Simard started the scoring with a two-run home run to left center and Braedon Stoakes and Buescher each had RBI singles in the frame.
The Tritons finished with 10 hits in game one and were led by Simard with three while Stoakes and Buescher had two each. Dustin Hagens took the loss in the opener giving up eight runs on four hits with six walks but issued seven walks to drop to 3-5 on the season.

The Saints scored first in the nightcap as Gould reached on an error by Zach Haygood that allowed Zebig to score in the home half of the first.
UMSL tied the game in the second on Green’s home run to left and took the lead in the third when Stoakes scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Maryville retook the lead in the bottom of the third on Elias Stevens grand slam to left center.
The Tritons were held to five hits in game two with Stoakes, Green, Dane Stevenson, Barrett Rose and Bryce Kulinski recording one each. Haygood gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in five innings pitched to fall to 3-1 on the season.
The Saints and Tritons will conclude their series on Saturday. First pitch at Weber Field is at 12 p.m.
