LIBERTY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team didn’t score for the final three minutes and 55 seconds of Thursday night’s Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup against William Jewell. But the Tritons still held on for a 78-77 victory, which helped the club clinch a berth into the GLVC Championship Tournament in March.
UMSL is now 15-10 on the season and 13-5 in GLVC league play, which is good enough for second place in the league standings. The Tritons, along with first place Missouri S&T and third place Upper Iowa, are assured of playing in the conference tournament which will be held at Lindenwood University’s Hyland Arena, March 6-9.
Seedings haven’t been completely set with two games remaining in the regular season, but UMSL knows for sure it will play in the postseason for the sixth straight year.
On Thursday, the Tritons and Cardinals battled back and forth throughout the contest. UMSL led in the early going, before William Jewell grabbed the lead late in the first half and led at halftime.
The Tritons scored the first basket of the second half to re-take the lead and led the entire second half. UMSL led by six points midway through and went ahead by seven when Savon Wykle hit a three-pointer to make the score 78-71 with 3:55 to go.
That was the last point UMSL would score in the game. William Jewell made three straight layups to pull within a point with a minute to go and had two chances to take the lead in the final minute. But both times, the UMSL defense forced a tough shot that missed and prevented the host Cardinals from winning the game.
William Jewell fell to 10-15 on the season and 7-10 in conference play. The Cardinals will need to win its three remaining games and get some help from around the conference to make the GLVC Tournament.
UMSL’s final two regular season games will be this Saturday, on the road against Truman State, and then next Thursday, February 27, at home against Drury.
Tip off for the game at Truman State will be at 3 p.m. at Pershing Arena in Kirksville. Next Thursday’s home finale against Drury will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
