NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team earned its fourth straight win, and sixth in the last seven games, when it held off Upper Iowa for a 70-67 victory, Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the Mark Twain Building.
UMSL is now 14-10 on the season and 12-5 in GLVC play. The victory also clinched the Tritons a spot in the GLVC Tournament, which will be played at Lindenwood University’s Hyland Arena in St. Charles, March 6-9.
The Tritons are currently in second place in the GLVC standings. Upper Iowa is in third, with a 17-8 overall record and an 11-6 mark in the conference.
UMSL grabbed the lead for good late in the first half and never trailed again. The Tritons pushed their lead to as many as 12 points midway through the second half, before Upper Iowa went on a 12-2 run to cut its deficit to one with 1:27 remaining.
In those final 90 seconds, UMSL made five free throws — two by Troy Glover and three by Savon Wykle — to hold off Upper Iowa, which missed three of its final four shots.
The key sequence in the game probably came with 10 seconds to go, when Upper Iowa’s Noah King stole the ball from Wykle with UMSL ahead 68-67. But as everyone raced upcourt for what could have been Upper Iowa’s attempt at a final winning shot, Peacocks’ forward Nick Reid pushed over an UMSL defender and was called for an offensive foul.
That gave the ball back to UMSL, where Wykle was fouled and made two free throws to put the Tritons up by three. Reid attempted a three at the buzzer to try to tie, but it missed and UMSL escaped with the win.
Junior Matt Enright led UMSL with 18 points, including three three-pointers and four assists. Glover scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. He also had three steals and two blocks.
Wykle, Janeir Harris, and Emanuel Prospere — UMSL’s three Senior Day honorees — each had 12 points.
The Tritons will be back in action on Thursday, February 20, when they’ll travel to Liberty, Mo. to take on William Jewell. Tip off that evening is set for 7:30 p.m.
