NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team came into Saturday needing one wi to clinch a spot in the 2025 postseason.
And though it took longer than expected on Saturday, UMSL got what it wanted as it defeated crosstown rival Maryville University, 4-0, to earn a spot in next week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The game featured a six-hour, 45-minute rain delay and had to be played at both the UMSL Baseball Field and Maryville’s Weber Field.
UMSL was the home team and the game started out at their field, with the teams expecting to play a doubleheader to close out the regular season. But after the fourth inning, the rain came and stopped… and came again and stopped… then came again.
It was so much rain, it made UMSL’s field unplayable. But it turned out Maryville’s Field, which is turf and had been covered because the Saints weren’t expecting to play their again this season, was playable.
So the decision was made to move the games to Weber Field in Chesterfield. Weber Field also has lights, which meant the teams could finish Game 1 and still be able to play Game 2.
The Tritons and Saints were able to continue and finished the fifth inning of Game 1. But then the rains came again. And this time, they didn’t let up.
That’s when the decision was made to call Game 1, which UMSL led 4-0 at the time, and cancel Game 2.
Maryville had already earned a spot in the GLVC Tournament. So it didn’t have any reason to play the second game. And UMSL had already gotten the win it needed, so the Tritons had no reason to play Game 2 either.
Both clubs will be playing in the GLVC Tournament. UMSL will be the No. 8 seed and will play top-seeded Lewis. Maryville will be the No. 3 seed and will play the No. 6 seed Quincy.

In the part of Saturday’s game that did get played, UMSL posted six hits. The big blow being a two-run home run by junior third baseman Cade Grevengoed.
It was part of a three-run third inning and it was Grevengoed’s seventh homer of the season.
Senior second baseman Andrew Buescher had two hits, including a single in the first that brought home UMSL’s first run.
Junior Nate Kemp (2-0) got the win. He only threw two pitches, but he produced a double play that got the Tritons out of a jam in the third inning and was the pitcher of record when UMSL took its big lead in the bottom part of the inning.
The win lifted UMSL’s record to 27-22 overall and 16-15 in GLVC play.

The GLVC Tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 7, and be played at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
The UMSL-Lewis game will be the final game of the night, with an expected first pitch at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to play a winner’s bracket game on Thursday night. The loser will go into the loser’s bracket and play an elimination game on Thursday afternoon.
The GLVC Tournament Championship Game will be Saturday, May 10, with the winner earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
