ST. LOUIS, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team won its 2022 home opener and picked up its first win of the new season, Sunday afternoon at Don Dallas Field, thanks to a 5-2 victory over Upper Iowa University. The Tritons improved their record to 1-0-1, while the visiting Peacocks fell to 0-2.

UMSL wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as it scored 0:33 into the contest. Drew Schenk slipped a pass from the left wing to Jack Meuse who got behind the defense and scored into the left side of the goal.

Meuse added his second goal a little more than 10 minutes later, when he teamed up with Mylz Barrington for a score.

Leo Sowa made it 3-0 in the 21st minute as he took the ball down the right side of the field and beat the keeper from 15 yards out for his first of the season. Sowa added his second of the game in the 27th minute as he put in rebound off of Yemil Lopez’s blocked shot.

The Tritons extended their lead to 5-0 early in the second half as Nick Schreiber scored off a turnover for his first of the season.

Both of Upper Iowa’s goals came on penalty kicks. Edward Stephens-Truman scored the first goal in the 50th minute and Yannis Sapim scored his second of the season with 4:08 remaining.

The Peacocks outshot UMSL 14-13 but the Tritons put eight shots on goal to five for Upper Iowa. Each team made three saves and both finished with five corner kicks.

UMSL returns to the pitch this Friday (September 2) as it heads up north to Kenosha, Wis., to take on former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Wisconsin-Parkside at 1:30 p.m.

The Tritons’ next home game will be next Sunday (September 4), when they will host another former GLVC foe in Kentucky Wesleyan. That match is slated to kickoff at 3 p.m.
