CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team trailed big for most of the night, Thursday night, but managed to rally back and force overtime, then pulled away in the extra period to win its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, 73-69, against William Jewell.
The game was played at Missouri Baptist University’s Petty Sports and Recreation Complex due to UMSL’s Mark Twain Building being used to host the Women’s Volleyball Midwest Regionals this weekend.
UMSL (3-4) has another game on Saturday against Rockhurst that will be played at the Mark Twain. The gametime has been moved from 3 p.m. to 2 p.m.
On Thursday, William Jewell turned a hot-shooting first 32 minutes into a 12-point lead, 54-42, with 7:38 left. But UMSL got back into the game by going on an 11-1 run to make the score 55-53 with 3:55 left.
The teams traded baskets and free throws over the final minutes of regulation, with William Jewell looking like it had put the game away with a pair of free throws with 7 seconds remaining. The Cardinals were up 64-61 and to foul UMSL’s Terrell Kabala to prevent giving up a three-pointer.
Kabala made the first free throw, then missed the second. Triton teammate Troy Glover II grabbed the offensive rebound and scored with five seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The two sides traded scores for the first 3:20 of the extra frame until Matt Enright gave UMSL the lead for good with a sprawling layup that made the score 70-68. The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game, but Eli Wingert made only 1-of-2 free throws with 1:20 left.
Those were the last points of the game William Jewell would score.
Kabala iced the game scoring on an old fashioned three-point play that put the Tritons up four with 0:12 left. Jewell had one more shot but Jordan Jermain’s shot was off the mark and Glover II secured the rebound to end the game.
Enright led all scorers with 16 points and was one of four UMSL players to reach double figures in scoring. Kabala and Mayson Quartlebaum had 15 points each, while Emanuel Prospere II finished with 14 points.
