NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team will look to end a three game losing streak this weekend, when it hosts a pair of rivalry games at the Mark Twain Building against Great Lakes Valley Conference foes, Missouri S&T and Maryville.
The Tritons take on S&T to open the homestand on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., then plays host to Maryville in a Saturday matinee game beginning at 3 p.m. UMSL comes into play this week looking to snap a three-game losing streak after losing games at Indianapolis and Lewis last weekend.
The Tritons enter play this week with records of 7-10 overall and 5-4 in the GLVC. UMSL had five players reach double figures on the score sheet led by Mayson Quartlebaum with 24 points but came up short in a 69-64 loss at Indianapolis last Thursday. UMSL couldn’t shake off a slow start in its 79-68 loss at Lewis this past Saturday.
Quartlebaum and Emanuel Prospere II led the Tritons with scoring with 15 points apiece against the Flyers while Savon Wykle added 14 points, Matt Enright dropped home 12 points and Troy Glover II added 10 points and seven rebounds.
UMSL has six players averaging nine or more points per game this season and are led by Enright with 12.5 per contest. He is joined in double figures by Quartlebaum at 11.4 per outing and Prospere II is adding 11.2 per game. Glover II is contributing 9.7 points and leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game while Wykle and Terrell Kabala are adding 9.2 and 9.0 points per contest respectively.
Glover II leads the GLVC in rebounding, is third in blocked shots per game with 1.5 and fifth in field goal percentage at 58 percent while Prospere II is sixth in the league having connected on 57.7 percent of his attempts from the field. Enright has the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the conference at 2.8 and is sixth in assists with 3.6 per game.
About Missouri S&T – The Miners enter Thursday’s contest with a record of 9-7 overall, are 3-6 in GLVC play and have dropped three straight and five of their last six overall. S&T fell to Rockhurst 91-79 last Thursday evening and then was defeated 78-72 by William Jewell in a back-and-forth contest on Saturday afternoon.
Cameron Stovall had a big game for the Miners finishing with a career-high 20 points while Andrew Young recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds and added three blocked shots while Kaden Froebe contributed 14 points.
S&T has four players averaging double figures in scoring this season led by Ikenna Okeke at 13.9 per game while Lovell Williams is contributing 13.2 per contest and Julien Smith and Froebe are averaging 12.6 and 10.3 points per outing. Young leads the team and is third in the conference in rebounding with 7.0 boards per game and ranks second in blocked shots with 1.8 per contest.
About Maryville – The Saints enter Thursday’s game at McKendree with a record of 7-8 overall including 3-6 in the GLVC and are riding a three-game winning streak after back-to-back home wins last weekend over William Jewell and Rockhurst.
Maryville got past the Cardinals last Thursday as Dewayne Vass scored the game-winning basket on a layup with 40.6 seconds remaining. The Saints overcame an 11-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game against the Hawks on Saturday to secure a 70-69 win as Luke Williams hit both ends of a one-and-one with 6.5 seconds left to give Maryville the lead.
Vass leads the squad in scoring this season at 11.9 points per contest while Williams is dropping in 11.1 points per outing. Ari Jackson is adding 9.5 points per game and owns a 41.4 percent mark from the three-point line. Tutu Chisholm is the team’s leading rebounder at 6.6 per contest and Vass leads the team with 73 assists and 31 steals.
