NORMANDY, MO — Coming off four straight losses and heading into a matchup against the No. 4-ranked team in the country, the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team was hosting its biggest matchup of the season, Thursday night at the Mark Twain Building.

And just as it had so often this season, before the four-game losing skid, UMSL lived up to the challenge, as the Tritons controlled the action for most of the night, on their way to a 64-57 win over fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis.

UMSL was led by grad student senior Victor Nwagbaraocha, who finished the night with a game-high 18 points, 4 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Teammate and fellow grad student, Bowen Sandquist added 10 points and eight rebounds, including a trio of three-pointers that helped the Tritons grab the lead late in the first half and never let go.

Freshman Matt Enright also hit three three-pointers to finish with nine points, while junior center Drew Cisse added six points (all on dunks) and eight rebounds to help control the paint for the Tritons.

The victory lifted UMSL’s overall record to 19-8 and improved its Great Lakes Valley Conference mark to 11-8. UMSL’s win also snapped UIndy’s 18-game winning streak.

At 11-8, the Tritons are now in a three-way tie for third place in the GLVC standings with Southwest Baptist and William Jewell, with one regular season game left. UIndy has already clinched the GLVC regular season title, but UMSL, Southwest Baptist, and William Jewell, each has a chance to move as high as second place, if it can win its regular season finale on Saturday and see Illinois-Springfield lose its finale.

Southwest Baptist will host Illinois-Springfield on Saturday, while William Jewell will host 11th place Truman State. UMSL will be at home for its finale as well, as the Tritons will host McKendree on Saturday.

Each of those contests are scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m., and should serve as a magnificent preview for next week’s GLVC Championship Tournament, which will begin on Thursday and will be played in Hyland Arena at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.

The event will also include the GLVC Women’s Basketball Tournament, with both championship games set to be played on Sunday, March 5. The men’s game will tip off at 1 p.m., with the women’s game set for 3:30 p.m.
