CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team put an end to a two-game losing streak on Tuesday, when it defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, 62-57, in the opening game of the Maryville Thanksgiving Classic at Maryville University’s Moloney Arena.
Three UMSL players scored in double-figures, led by sophomore Matt Enright, who had 16 points and made four three-pointers. Emanuel Prospere scored 12 points and added six assists, while Mayson Quartlebaum posted his first double-double of the season, wih 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The teams traded baskets to begin the game and the lead changed hands six times in the first five minutes. But then UMSL went on a quick 7-0 spurt to go ahead 13-8 and never trailed again.
In fact, UMSL pushed its lead to as many as 10 points late in the first half, before going into the break ahead 31-24.
Enright hit a three to begin the second half and put the Tritons back up 10. Parkside spent most of the second half trying to rally and did get as close as three points on two different occasions. But both times UMSL responded with a layup basket — one by Prospere and another by Quartlebaum — to push the lead back to five points.
The Tritons went on the push their lead to as many as points with a minute to go, before finally closing out the game with a five-point win.
UMSL is now 2-3 on the season and will play its second game in the Maryville Thanksgiving Classic on Wednesday, against No. 17-ranked Northwest Missouri State. Tip-off at Moloney Arena is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
