UMSL never trailed in the opening set as it started the match on a 10-3 run and led by as many as seven points in the frame. Rockhurst got to within three halfway through but couldn’t overcome the Triton attack as UMSL hit .357 in the stanza with 21 kills and were led by Alayna Santel and Maggie Johnson with seven kills apiece.
The second set was all Hawks as it hit .344 in the stanza while holding the Tritons to a .108 attack percentage. Sarah Pyle and Lexi Theis combined for half of Rockhurst’s 14 kills in the set.
UMSL led for most of the swing set and were up 24-19 after a kill from Santel but the Hawks fought off five straight points to tie it at 24 on a kill from Pyle. Iyannah Jackson put the Tritons back in front with a kill and then Santel served out the set with an ace to win it 26-24.
The fourth set was the tightest of the match featuring 10 ties and four lead changes. The two sides kept trading points until Rockhurst ran off three straight points to move ahead 19-17. UMSL responded in a huge fashion scoring seven straight points with Weaver serving six of them to reach match point at 24-19. Weaver had two aces in the run while Santel added a kill and a block.
The Hawks fought off the first match point with a kill from Delaney Hope but not a second as Santel terminated a ball to end the match.
