NORMANDY, MO — After opening the season with a pair of dynamic wins on the road, the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team played its 2024 home opener at Don Dallas Field on the UMSL campus.
And the Tritons looked very comfortable being at home on Thursday, as they got goals from five different players in a 5-0 rout of visiting Newman College.
UMSL is now 3-0 on the year and off to its best start to a season in nearly 30 years.
On Thursday, it was the veterans that got the Tritons going. Senior Jada Holloman scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 13th minute, when teammate Josie Maddox fired a shot that was stopped by the Newman goalkeeper.
But Maddox won the rebound and centered a crossing pass through the goalbox to Holloman, who slammed it home to put the Tritons up 1-0.
Three minutes later, Maddox was the one who received a crossing pass — from teammate Jaycee Cotton — and drilled it into the Newman net to make the score 2-0.
In the 30th minute the Tritons scored off a set piece. Emily Bloomfield took the corner kick and found Julie Steiger at the top of the 6-yard box. Steiger headed the ball home inside the back post for her second goal in as many games giving UMSL a 3-0 lead.
The first half ended with a couple of UMSL’s younger players teaming up for a score.
Freshman Abrianna Garrett sent a crossing pass from the right corner into the box. Fellow fellow freshman Madi Riege redirected it off a Newman defender to another freshamn Gwen Maggard, who banged it home for her first collegiate goal.
UMSL’s final goal came halfway through the second half, when Julia Murdoch intercepted a pass in the Newman end and scored on a breakaway in the 69th minute. It was Murdoch’s first goal as a Triton since transferring to UMSL from North Alabama.

UMSL outshot Newman 22-2, with 12 of those shots being on goal to just one for Newman.
Sophomore Rylee Griffith made her first start in net, and earned the shutout win, making one save on the night.
After enjoying the short stint at home, the Tritons will be back in action and back on the road on Sunday, September 15, when they’ll travel to Springfield to begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a match against Drury.
That contest will begin at noon and will be followed by a match by the schools’ men’s teams at 2:30 p.m.
UMSL’s next home match will be on September 27, when the Tritons will host Lincoln.
