ST. LOUIS, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team won its eighth straight game Saturday afternoon, when it defeated visiting Missouri S&T, 74-39, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup at the Mark Twain Building.

UMSL, which is now 8-1 on the season and 4-0 in GLVC play, hadn’t played a game against anyone in three weeks and hadn’t played a fellow NCAA Division II opponent in more than a month. But the Tritons looked sharp and ready to go, right from the outset.

The Tritons never trailed at any point in Saturday’s contest, and the score was only tied at twice — at zero-zero when the game began and at 9-9 about four minutes into the game. Other than those moments, UMSL was in complete control.

Freshman Mallory Ronshausen led all scorers with 17 points, which included four made three-pointers on nine attempts. Fellow freshman Jalysa Stokes came off the bench to add 15 points, while sophomore center Kiara Stewart had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

UMSL took control of the game in the final five minutes of the first quarter, when it outscored S&T 13-3, to take a 22-12 lead. Then, in the second quarter, the Tritons absolutely shut down the Lady Miners, by outscoring them 22-4, to take a 44-16 lead into halftime.

The loss dropped S&T’s record to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Lady Miners are in fourth place in the GLVC West Division.

UMSL remains in first place in the GLVC Central, a half-game ahead of Truman State, which is 4-1 in the conference, after defeating McKendree on Saturday.

If Covid allows, UMSL’s next game will be Thursday, January 13, when the Tritons will go on the road to play Lewis. UMSL’s next home game will be next Thursday, January 20, when the Tritons will host Truman State at the Mark Twain Building.
