NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team picked up its fourth straight win and remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, thanks to a 74-60 victory over Upper Iowa, Monday night at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons are now 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GLVC. Upper Iowa is 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Three different Tritons scored in double figures, led by Jalysa Stokes, who had a game-high 24 points. Sophomore teammate Morgan Ramthun scored 16 points and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with two steals. Fellow sophomore Amaya Blake had 10 points and three assists.
The Tritons and Peacocks played back-and-forth in the early going, with both teams taking the lead. But UMSL took control late in the first quarter, when it scored nine straight points to go ahead 21-12.
Upper Iowa scored the last three points of the first quarter and the first two points of the second to get within four points. But that was as close as the Peacocks would get the rest of the game, as UMSL stormed ahead and led by 14 at halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams put together strong runs. UMSL led by as many as 16, but Upper Iowa cut its deficit down to four on two different occasions. Both times though, the Tritons responded with a set of buckets that put the home team ahead by 11 at the end of three.
In the fourth quarter, the UMSL defense tightened and only allowed Upper Iowa to score nine points, which allowed UMSL to cruise to its second home win in as many home games.
For the game, UMSL shot 48 percent from the floor (33-for-69), which included making just one of 12 three-pointers. The Tritons did make 88 percent (seven-of-eight) of their free throws, which helped prevent any chance of an Upper Iowa comeback.
UMSL will continue its busy week of home games with a contest on Thursday, November 30, against William Jewell. That game will actually be played at Missouri Baptist’s Petty Student Rec Center due to UMSL hosting the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Midwest Regional this weekend.
That contest will tip off at 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by a men’s game between the two schools at 7:30 p.m.
The UMSL basketball teams will also host Rockhurst on Saturday, December 2. Even with the volleyball event this weekend, the Saturday basketball games will be played at the Mark Twain Building.
The women’s game will begin at 12 p.m., and the men’s game will start at 2:30 p.m.
