TOPEKA, KS — The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team opened its new season with a stunning 2-0 upset over No. 2-ranked Washburn at Yager Stadium.
It was UMSL’s first win against a ranked opponent since it defeated a then-No. 8 ranked Rockhurst team in 2019.
The Tritons got goals from seniors Jada Holloman and Jaycee Cotton, and a three-save shutout from junior goalkeeper Mary Kate Neal to earn the victory.
Washburn, which played for the NCAA Division II national championship last season and was picked to win the MIAA conference championship this year, controlled the action for much of the night.
The Ichabods outshot UMSL 11-3, had five corner kicks to the Tritons’ one, and forced UMSL to commit 10 fouls. But the Triton defense never wavered and refused to give up any goals.
The tide truly turned in the 21st minute — on UMSL’s first shot of the game — when Holloman blasted a shot past Washburn goalkeeper Hailey Beck to put the Tritons on the board. It was the eighth goal of Holloman’s career.
The score stayed that was until Cotton broke free with 22 seconds left and scored the 10th goal of her career to seal the upset.
The shutout was the sixth of Neal’s career.
The Tritons (1-0) will be back in action on Saturday, when they will face Northwest Missouri State in another match at Yager Stadium. That contest will kick off at 3:30 p.m.
