ST. LOUIS, MO – University of Missouri-St. Louis shortstop Irene Travis was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday, following a spectacular weekend, when she went 11-for-14 (.786) at the plate in four Triton wins over league rivals Maryville and Missouri S&T.
The UMSL junior from Orland Park, Ill., had multiple hits in all four games, which included nine singles and two doubles, while also driving in three runs and scoring three runs herself.
For the season, Travis is UMSL’s second-leading hitter, with a .337 average, and a .775 on-base percentage.
The four wins over the weekend extended the Tritons’ current win streak to seven games in a row since the beginning of April.
UMSL has also raised its overall record to 26-13, to go along with a 15-5 mark in GLVC play, which has the Tritons currently sitting in fifth place in the conference standings.
UMSL is in the midst of a long stretch of road games, which includes last weekend, this coming weekend, and a pair of games during the middle of next week.
This particular weekend is a huge one for the Tritons, as they will be on the road to face the No. 5-ranked team in the country, Indianapolis, in a key doubleheader on Saturday.
UIndy is 34-4 on the season and 14-2 in league play. If UMSL could split the two games, or perhaps win both, the Tritons could leap into third place in the GLVC standings, while also dropping UIndy as low as fourth.
The Tritons next set of home games will be in two weeks, when UMSL will host a doubleheader against crosstown rival, Lindenwood University, on April 24 at the UMSL Softball Field. Lindenwood is also having a fine season. The Lions are 28-6 on the year, and currently sit in third place in the league standings with a 15-3 mark.
