ELMHURST, IL — One week after suffering its first loss of the season against No. 1-ranked North Central, the Washington University football team got itself back on the winning track with a blowout win over winless Elmhurst College, 49-6, Saturday afternoon at Langhorst Field.
The Bears led start to finish, and were especially dominant in the second and third quarters, when they outscored the Bluejays 35-6 to pull away.
Quarterback Matt Rush had another fine day for Wash. U. The senior signal-caller threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns, and helped the Bears earn 27 first downs, while the Bluejays managed just six and were outgained by Wash. U. 498 yards to 111.
The Bears took their first lead midway through the first quarter, when Rush hit wide receiver Collin Hoyhta for a 40-yard touchdown that made the score 7-0.
The second quarter though, is when Rush really got going.
First, on the second play of the second quarter, he found a wide open Cole Okmin for a 15-yard touchdown that put the Bears up 14-0. Then after a turnover, Rush threw a short pass to Treyton Lamphier, who broke a tackle then outran the rest of the Elmhurst defense to the end zone for a 25-yard score that made it 21-0.
Elmhurst scored its only touchdown of the day on its next drive. But Wash. U. answered with another Rush to Hoyhta score, just before halftime, to make it 28-6.
In the third quarter, the Bears’ two running backs — Kenvorris Campbell and Kenneth Hamilton — both score a touchdown to put Wash. U. up 42-6. Campbell added another score in the fourth quarter to give the Bears their final margin of the day at 49-6.
The victory lifted Wash. U.’s record to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in CCIW play. Elmhurst fell to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the CCIW.
The Bears will be back home at Francis Olympic Field next week, when they’ll take on No. 15-ranked Wheaton College in what may be the biggest game of the season for both teams.
Both teams have lost to North Central already this season, so there’s little chance either could catch the top-ranked Cardinals for the conference championship. But the winner of next Saturday’s contest has a strong chance of earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III playoffs, which will begin nationwide in three weeks.
Wash. U. hasn’t made the playoffs since 2016, and is looking for its first postseason appearance under head coach Aaron Keen.
