ST. LOUIS, MO — The Washington University women’s softball team reached 30 wins for the first time since 2016, thanks to a pair of victories, Saturday afternoon at the Wash. U. Softball Field, over Fontbonne College to close out the 2022 regular season.

The Bears (30-10), who had a losing season in 2019, had winning seasons in 2020 and 2021, but those years were both cut short due to the pandemic. 2022 is the first full women’s college softball season in three years, and Washington University has been fantastic all year.

The Bears have had four different four game or longer winning streaks this year, including a season-best seven-game run in mid-April. But some of the best action came this past weekend, when Wash. U. doubled up on Fontbonne with a pair of 5-2 wins.

The victories gave the Bears 12 wins in their last 14 games, and has Wash. U. set up for a prime spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament, which will begin on May 12.

On Saturday, the Bears got an equal amount of outstanding hitting and dynamite pitching to help put away the Griffins.

At the plate, three different Wash. U. hitters had four hits each in the two games to lead the offense. Tami Wong and Erin Reardon both had two hits in each game, and Maggie Baumstark had a hit in Game 1 and three hits in Game 2, to go along with four total RBIs, and two runs scored, as the Bears took control of each game early.

Fontbonne actually scored the first two runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1, but Wash. U. answered back with two runs of it own in the second inning, then took the lead with three more scores, which proved to be enough to earn the win.

Then in Game 2, the Bears jumped on the Griffins for a single run in the first, and three more in the second, to go ahead before the visitors even knew what hit them.

Starting pitchers Holly Stoner (10-4) and Madison Denton (11-2) got the wins in the circle, by pitching a combined nine innings and allowing just the four runs in the two games.
