After spending several weeks ranked amongst the top five teams in the country, the Washington University baseball team finally reached the top spot this week when it was voted No. 1 team by D3Baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The NCBWA released its Top 25 national poll on Tuesday, and after receiving the most first-place votes (14) and the most points overall (610), Wash. U. is now the top Division III baseball team in the country.

This achievement marks only the second time the Bears have been ranked No. 1 in the nation. The other time came in 2020, just before the season was put to an end due to the covid pandemic.

Wash. U. has a current record of 17-1 and was the last remaining undefeated team until it lost the second game of a doubleheader this past Sunday. That loss came at the hands of crosstown rival and NCBWA No. 4 team in the country Webster University, whom Wash. U. had defeated once earlier that day and swept in a doubleheader three weeks ago.

Hoping to get back on the winning track and looking to show themselves worthy of being ranked the No. 1 team in the country, the Bears will be back in action this weekend when they’ll host a pair of doubleheaders against Spalding University.

The four games will be played at Kelly Field on Saturday and Sunday, with Game 1 each day scheduled to begin at noon, and the nightcaps set for 3 p.m. starts.
