The Washington University women’s soccer team continued its unbeaten run to begin the 2021 fall season Wednesday evening, with a 3-1 win over visiting Millikin University at Francis Olympic Field.

The Bears are 3-0-1 on the season and are currently ranked No. 5 in the country, according to the United Soccer Coaches’ NCAA Division III women’s soccer national poll.

On Wednesday, Wash. U. did it with aggressive play from start to finish.

The Bears outshot Millikin 23-2, with 10 of those shots being on goal to just one for the Big Blue. Wash. U. also produced 10 corner kicks, while Millikin had just two.

The home team got the scoring going early, when in the 18th minute, sophomore midfielder Tyler Wilson banged home a rebound from right in front of the Millikin net, for her second goal of the season — and second in two straight games — to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Millikin, which didn’t have many offensive attacks on the night, actually tied the score about 10 minutes later, when junior Maddy Wood stole a rebound from Wash. U. goalkeeper Sidney Conner and then manuevered around several Bear defenders to score a goal that made it 1-1.

Wash. U. stayed aggressive though, and in the 38th minute forced Millikin to take a foul inside their own box. That gave the Bears’ a penalty kick, which senior Erin Flynn drilled past Millikin goalkeeper Hope Limoges for her first goal of the season and a 2-1 Wash. U. lead.

The score stayed that way until the Bears added an insurance goal in the 74th minute on a beautiful play by Kate Flynn and Arian Miles. Flynn worked her way around a Millikin defender then sent a crossing pass to Miles, who wasted no time in blasting a shot past Limoges for her first goal of the year and a 3-1 lead Wash. U. would never relinquish.

Millikin fell to 3-2 on the season.

Wash. U. will look to keep its hot start to the season going this weekend, when it travels to Memphis, for a tournament hosted by Rhodes College. The Bears will play Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday and an opponent to be determined on Sunday.

Wash. U.’s next home game will be Friday, September 24, when the Bears will host Wheaton College. That game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
