CLAYTON, MO — The Washington University men’s basketball team earned its 10th trip to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 on Saturday, by knocking off Franklin College by the score of 83-54 in an NCAA Tournament second round game at the WashU Field House.
The Bears are now 21-6 and will play No. 22-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran in the next round in a game in La Crosse, Wisc. The game will be played on Friday, March 14. Tip off time has not been set yet.
On Saturday, WashU played a dynamite first half and led 36-24. But the key was a blazing hot second half, where the Bears shot 66 percent (18-of-27) and outscored the Grizzlies 47-30.
Four WashU players scored in double figures, led by Hayden Doyle, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Teammate Drake Kindsvater added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jake Davis and Connor May both came off the bench to score 14 points apiece.
WashU really got going in the final five minutes of the first half, when it went on a 14-2 run that put the Bears up for good. The hot shooting second half helped WashU build its lead to 20 points midway through and then to as many as 33 points in the final minutes, before it finally won by 29.
The WashU-Wisconsin Lutheran winner will play the winner of Friday’s other Sweet 16 game — Illinois Wesleyan versus Wisconsin-La Crosse — in the regional final next Saturday.
