WHEATON, IL — The Washington University football team will play perhaps its biggest game of the 2025 season this weekend.
The Bears are headed up north, near Chicago, to take on longtime rival Wheaton College in a battle of CCIW second place teams.
WashU has a 5-1 overall. Wheaton is 4-2 and ranked No. 20 in the country. But both teams are 4-1 in conference play.
Both teams’ one conference loss has been to undefeated, No. 1 ranked, and defending national champion North Central. Otherwise, both the Bears and the Thunder have been fantastic this season. And that’s why the winner of Saturday’s game might earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III football playoffs.
The loser will certainly be out. But the winner, if it can win the rest of its regular season games, will have a strong case for deserving a spot in the playoffs.
The Bears and Thunder have played some classic games in the past, including an all-timer the last time WashU was at Wheaton in 2023.
In that game, WashU nearly pulled off a sensational comeback by scoring two touchdowns in the final five minutes to take the lead. But Wheaton topped it by pulling off a last-second, last-play Hail Mary pass for a touchdown and two-point conversion to win the game.
Kickoff at McCully Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Players to Watch: WashU is led by junior QB Levi Moore, who ranks among the top dual-threat players in the conference with 1,166 total yards (797 passing, 369 rushing), along with seven rushing touchdowns and 12 touchdown passes.
Senior RB Fred Ware leads the Bears in rushing with 476 yards and five touchdowns, while sophomore Matthew Kinoshita has 430 yards and averages 6.1 yards per carry.
Junior WR Makael Carter has 19 catches for 319 yards, five touchdowns, and leads the CCIW with an average of 16.9 yards per reception.
Wheaton ranks second in the conference in offense and defense. QB Mark Forcucci has thrown for 1,202 yards and 13 touchdowns, with his primary target being WR Seth Kortenhoeven, who has 37 catches for 545 yards and six touchdowns.
