Rochester, NY — The Washington University women’s basketball team defeated No. 16 Rochester, 75-67, on Friday evening to improve to 5-1 in UAA play and 12-5 overall.

Senior Maya Arnott led the Bears with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Jessica Brooks also reached double-figures with 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Karisa Grandison and Naomi Jackson each chipped in seven points while Grandison also had seven rebounds and four assists.

Arnott scored the first bucket of the game, and the Bears were up 4-3 midway through the first quarter but would trail by a handful of points for the entire first quarter.

The Yellowjackets went up by as many as seven points, 17-10, but the Bears scored the final six points of the quarter behind a jumper from first-year Nailah McBeth and layups from Arnott and Brooks.

WashU went on a 9-0 run to open the second quarter, taking a 25-19 lead. Arnott put in a layup to start the run and senior Sammi Matoush drilled a 3-pointer to follow. Arnott and sophomore Brenna Loftus added two more buckets to put the Bears ahead six points.

The Bears scored five-straight on a pair of free throws from Arnott and a 3-pointer from first-year Jordan Rich, going up 11 points (37-26) with 1:28 remaining. WashU headed into half time with a 37-28 edge.

Although Rochester outscored the Bears 20-14 in the third quarter, WashU held on to a 51-48 lead to end the quarter.

With 7:42 on the clock, Brooks put in a layup and hit a free throw and then followed it up with another layup to put the Bears up 15 points, 47-32.

In the final four minutes of the third quarter, Rochester went on a 7-2 run to cut the Bears’ lead to three points.

The Yellowjackets came out to tie things up at 53 apiece at the 8:10 mark but the Bears responded with a 10-0 run.

A pair of free throws from Arnott started the run. Grandison and Jackson hit back-to-back shots from distance and Brooks closed out the run with a jumper to take a 63-53 lead at 5:46.

The Bears were up 67-58 with 3:23 on the clock and with less than two minutes left, Rochester’s Alexis Sestric hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to five points. Another 3-pointer with 23 seconds left put Rochester in a five-point deficit again, but the Bears held off any further attempts en route to the win.

WashU crushed Rochester on the boards, out rebounding the Yellowjackets 44-27.

The Bears are back in action on Sunday with a road game against first place Emory College.
