BRONX, NY — The Saint Louis University baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, when it suffered an 8-4 loss to Atlantic 10 Conference foe, Fordham University.
Saint Louis beat Southern Indiana on April 9, swept Davidson last weekend, then won Game 1 of this weekend’s series against Fordham, before falling on Saturday.
The host Rams banged out 14 hits, including four doubles and a home run, to even up the series with the Billikens.
Leadoff man Daniel Bucciero led the way for Fordham. He had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in a career-high five runs. One of his hits was a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that helped break the game open for the Rams, who were leading 3-2 at the time.
Rightfielder Andrew Kanellis also had three hits and two RBIs for Fordham.
Saint Louis had just six hits in the game, led by Easton Richter, who had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. The Billikens actually led early in the game. They scored runs in the first and third innings to go ahead 2-0, before Fordham scored seven straight runs to take the lead at 7-2.
SLU’s batters weren’t the only ones who had a rough day. Pitchers Charlie Weber and Jackson Yarberry combined to give up 12 hits and those seven straight runs.
Weber started the game and took the loss. He is now 2-1 on the season.
The Billikens got two more runs back in the seventh, after a walk, a hit batter, and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with nobody out. Ben Gallaher drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Richter singled home a run to make the score 7-4.
But that was as close as Saint Louis would get, as Fordham added a run of its own in the bottom of the seventh, then closed out SLU’s final six outs to finish the game.
The Billikens are now 26-9 on the season and 8-3 in the A-10.
SLU and Fordham will play the final game of their series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
