ELMHURST, IL — The Washington University football team earned its third straight win, Saturday afternoon, when it defeated Elmhurst University 49-10, in a road game at Langhorst Field.
The Bears are 5-1 on the season and have won each game by at least 10 points. And during its current three-game win streak, the Bears have outscored their opponents 147-49.
On Saturday, WashU scored seven touchdowns in the game and led 49-3 at one point.
Several stars shined bright for the Bears, particularly on offense, where sophomore quarterback Levi Moore completed 12-of-14 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Running backs Kenneth Hamilton, Fred Ware, and Matthew Kinoshita combined for 206 rushing yards and four touchdowns. And senior wide receiver Collin Goldberg caught six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, and also returned a punt 71 yards for a score.
The WashU defense held Elmhurst to just 32 yards rushing and sacked the Elmhurst quarterback three times. Freshman defensive lineman Jack Middleton was one of the leaders of the defense and was in on 1.5 of those sacks.
WashU took its initial lead on just the fourth play of the game, when Hamilton broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run to put the Bears on the board. WashU stopped Elmhurst on its first drive, forcing a punt, which Goldberg returned for a touchdown to make the score 14-0 less than five minutes into the game.
Elmhurst kicked a field goal late in the first to make it 14-3. From there though, WashU simply took over.
The Bears scored five straight touchdowns — three in the second quarter, one in the third, and one in the fourth — to go ahead 49-3 midway through the fourth quarter. Those touchdowns included Hamilton’s second score of the day, both of Moore’s touchdown throws, and touchdown runs by Ware and Kinoshita.
In total, the Bears outgained the Blue Jays 412 to 194, produced 24 first downs (to Elmhurst’s 10), and held the ball for more than 32 minutes.
Saturday’s victory sets up a huge matchup next week for WashU. The Bears, who are 4-1 in CCIW league play, will be back home to face No. 24-ranked Wheaton, which is also 4-1 in the conference, in a battle for second place in the CCIW standings.
Kickoff next Saturday at Francis Olympic Field is set for 1 p.m.
