ROCHESTER, NY — The No. 1-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team clinched its second straight University Athletic Association (UAA) championship, Sunday afternoon, when it defeated No. 15-ranked Rochester, 2-0, in a match at Rochester’s Fauver Stadium.
It was the 17th time WashU has won the UAA title overall, and the Bears have won at least a share of the title in eight of the last nine years.
The victory lifted WashU’s record to 17-0-1 and gave the Bears a 6-0 mark in conference play, with one regular season game left on the schedule.
The Bears quickly put a goal on the board, 7:13 in, as junior Grace Ehlert scored her 12th goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Sophie Viscovich. The goal marks Ehlert’s fifth game-winning goal of the year and she ranks second among UAA players, second only to teammate Olivia Clemons.
WashU scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute as Clemons scored her team and conference-leading 17th goal of the year on an assist from first-year Cami Colpitts.
The Bears tallied 22 total shots with 12 on goal to Rochester’s five total with four on goal. WashU also recorded 11 corner kicks to the Yellowjackets’ three.
Graduate goalkeeper Sidney Conner made four saves on the day – all in the first half – for her sixth shutout of the season.
WashU will close out the regular season on Saturday morning, when it takes on the University of Chicago. Opening kick is set for 11 a.m.
