CREVE COEUR, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team won its first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, when it defeated McKendree University, 1-0, in the GLVC Tournament championship game, Saturday afternoon at the Creve Coeur Soccer Park.
UMSL midfielder Adelaide Green scored on a rocket shot from just outside of the the McKendree goal box in the 81st minute for the only goal of the game. It was the sophomore from Cottleville, Mo.’s (Francis Howell Central) second goal of the season.
The play was the result of a fierce second half attack by the Tritons, who managed to keep the ball inside McKendree territory during almost the entire second 45 minutes of play. In fact, UMSL generated 13 shots in the second half and got six on goal.

The first half was more balanced with both goalkeepers being called upon to make nearly identical saves.
Three minutes into the game, UMSL keeper Mary Kate Neal punched the ball over the bar on a curling McKendree shot to prevent a goal. The Triton defense then had to scramble during the ensuing corner kick to find the ball, but it did and managed to keep McKendree from scoring.
In the 17th minute, UMSL’s Josie Maddox sent a high, curling shot towards the McKendree goal and forced the Bearcat keeper to make a diving save.
Overall, the Tritons outshot the Bearcats 18-9.
The shutout is Neal’s 10th of the season, which is tied for third-most by an UMSL goalkeeper in a single season.
