CLAYTON, MO — The No. 1-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team looked every bit like the best team in the country, Sunday evening, when it defeated Simpson College, 5-1, in an NCAA Tournament second round game at Francis Olympic Field.
WashU was led by sophomore midfielder Sophie Viscovich, who scored two goals and added an assist, as the Bears stormed out to a 5-0 lead on their way to their 19th win of the season.
The Bears are 19-0-2 on the season and with the win, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the 19th time in program history.

Grad student defender Ally Hackett scored the first goal of the game, off a rebound of a Viscovich shot, in the game’s 13th minute.
Bears star Grace Ehlert scored 18 seconds later to put WashU up 2-0. It was her 13th goal of the season.
Viscovich scored the next two goals — her fourth and fifth strikes of the season. Then freshman Olivia Clemons, who was named first-team All-UAA and conference Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season to put the Bears up 5-0 heading into halftime.
Simpson scored a goal in the 64th minute to prevent a shutout, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the high-powered and top-ranked WashU squad.
The Bears outshot Simpson, 22-6, with 12 of those shots being on goal to just four for the visiting Storm, which ended its season with a 15-3-3 record.

WashU will host the regional semifinals and finals this weekend at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears will play Colby College in the first regional semi, with Messiah College and the University of Chicago set to play in the other.
Those games will be on Saturday, November 23. The WashU/Colby will begin at 11 a.m., and be followed by the Messiah/UofChicago game at 1:30 p.m.
The two winners will then meet in the regional final on Sunday, November 24, at 1 p.m. The winner of that contest will advance to the National Championship Final Four, which will be played December 5 and 8 in Las Vegas.
