ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University men’s basketball team will play its first home game in more than a week, Monday night at Chaifetz Arena, when the Billikens will host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
After two dynamite victories, Saint Louis is coming off a rough defeat, last Friday, when the Billikens were defeated 88-63 by Wichita State, in a game at the NABC Hall of Fame Classic at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
SLU (2-2) led for most of the first half, but then saw Wichita State took control and the lead just before halftime. Then in the second half, the Shockers came out storming and turned a three-point lead into a 20-point edge with just over nine minutes to go.
The Billikens never recovered and eventually lost by 25 points.
Quinnipiac (3-3) is coming off a similar type defeat this past Saturday against UMass-Lowell. The Bobcats led at halftime and maintained that lead well into the second half, but UM-L got hot midway through the second half to pull even, then hit several big baskets down the stretch to pull out a 10-point win.
Monday’s meeting will be the first ever between SLU and Quinnipiac.
Players to Watch: As always, the Billikens will be led by senior guard Gibson Jimerson. He leads Saint Louis with an 18.8 points per game average and ranks ninth in the NCAA with 4.0 three-pointers made per game.
Jimerson is also SLU’s all-time leading three-pointer shooter, with 328 makes, and he is 11 points away from surpassing SLU Hall of Famer Erwin Claggett for second on the Billikens’ all-time scoring list. Jimerson is also just 73 points away from passing Anthony Bonner for the school record of 1,972 points.
SLU junior and native St. Louisan Kellen Thames has also gotten off to a fantastic start this season. The former Pattonville High standout is averaging 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, and he ranks among the NCAA Top 20 in field-goal percentage (68.6 percent).
Newcomers Isaiah Swope and Kalu Anya have also been strong contributors for the Billikens. Swope leads the team with 4.8 assists per game and Anya leads with a 10.3 rebounds per game average.
Quinnipiac is a member of the Metro Atlantic Atlantic Conference and was picked to win that league after capturing the regular season title and winning a program-record 24 games last year.
The Bobcats’ top player is forward Amarri Monroe. He was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, after averaging 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds last year. He’ll coming into Monday’s game averaging 15.0 ppg this season.
Other key contributors for Quinnipiac include Khaden Bennett, who had 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss to UM-L, and Paul Otieno, who leads the Bobcats in rebounding and had 18 points and 11 rebounds against UM-L.
Up Next: SLU will play its third game in six days, when it hosts UM-L on Wednesday. Tip off at Chaifetz Arena that evening is set for 7 p.m.
