ST. CHARLES, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team completed a furious comeback in the final two minutes of regulation, then stormed past its opponent, Rockhurst University, in overtime to earn a 77-70 win in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, Thursday afternoon at Lindenwood University’s Hyland Arena.
UMSL trailed Rockhurst 67-62 with just over two minutes left in regulation, but held the Hawks scoreless as it was able to get the five points it needed to force overtime.
The Tritons got a layup by Troy Glover and a free throw by Matt Enright to pull to within 67-65 with a minute to play. Then after Rockhurst missed a shot, UMSL’s Emanuel Prospere made a driving layup with 15 seconds left that tied the score and forced the game into overtime.
In those extra five minutes, UMSL dominated play, as it outscored Rockhurst 10-3 on its way to a thrilling first day tournament win. Glover made a layup, Janeir Harris hit a three-pointer, and Enright added a jumper of his own, as the Tritons made their first three shots to jump out to a quick seven-point overtime lead and never trailed again in the game.
Prospere led the Tritons with 26 points and nine rebounds, Enright added 22 points, including three three-pointers, and Savon Wykle chipped in 11 points.
UMSL will now move on to the GLVC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, where the Tritons will play the winner of Friday’s GLVC quarterfinal game between Truman State and Upper Iowa.
Saturday’s semifinal will tip off at 2:15 p.m., with the winner advancing to the GLVC Tournament championship game, which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m., at Hyland Arena.
