CLAYTON, MO — The Washington University baseball team extended its current winning streak to five straight games by sweeping a four-game series against Brandeis University this weekend at Kelly Field.
The Bears swept two separate doubleheaders from the visiting Judges. On Friday, WashU won 10-4 and 9-2. Then after rain forced a postponement of Saturday’s games, WashU swept two games on Sunday by scores of 4-0 and 1-0.
On Friday, the Bears banged out 27 hits — 10 for extra bases — including four home runs in a double-decker mauling of the Judges. Then on Saturday, pitching was the difference, as WashU got a pair shutouts from its pitching staff.
The Bears are now 22-13 on the season and listed among “those receiving votes” in this week’s D3Baseball.com Top 25 national poll.

Junior Isaac Zhang (3-1) threw a complete-game shutout in the opener on Sunday. The lefty flamethrower went all nine innings and gave up just four hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, three pitchers combined to keep Brandeis scoreless. Freshman Levi Gingerich (1-2) got his first win as a college pitcher. He tossed six innings and only allowed one hit, with five walks, and seven strikeouts of his own.
Teammates Sebastian Guzman and Owen Block came in the pitch the final three innings. Block got the save — his first this season — after pitching two scoreless innings with no hits and five strikeouts.

With the offense shining like it did on Friday, the hitting star for the day was senior centerfielder Brandon Buday, who went five-for-five with three RBIs and four runs scored. Buday had two singles, a double, a triple, and a home run, making him the first WashU player to hit for the cycle this season.
In the second game, Buday had two more hits and scored two more runs. Teammates Kevin Stephens and Shane Pellegrino both had three hits. Stephens also scored a run and had a stolen base, while Pellegrino had two RBIs.
Grad student first baseman Noah Reichman, who hit his seventh homer of the season in Game 1, finished the weekend with six hits, the home run, and six RBIs.
The Bears will play their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday, when they’ll host crosstown rival Webster University in a makeup game from a rainout on March 19. First pitch at Kelly Field is slated for 3 p.m.
