FLORENCE, KY — The Gateway Grizzlies swept a doubleheader from the Florence Y’alls on Saturday night, taking 6-3 and 4-0 victories in seven innings each at Thomas More Stadium to clinch a third straight playoff berth for the first time in club history.

Gateway, which currently sits one game behind the Schaumburg Boomers for first place in the Frontier League West Division standings, has 53 wins on the year and will finish no worse than second place in the final standings.

That determination means the Grizzlies will be in the playoffs this season no matter what happens in the final week of the regular season.

Gateway has cinched on of two Wild Card spots and could possibly catch Schaumburg for the division title over the final week.

The Grizzlies and Boomers won’t face each other again in the regular season, but Gateway has an easier schedule in its final seven games, which could allow the club to win the games it needs to pass Schaumburg in the standings.

Gateway has one more game against Florence, then will travel south for a three-game set against the Mississippi Mud Monsters, before concluding the regular season with three games against the Evansville Otters in Sauget next weekend.

The Frontier League playoffs will begin on September 3, with the Wild Card team hosting the Division Winner in Game 1. Games 2 and 3, if necessary, will be played at the home park of the Division Winner.

The winner of that series will advance to the Conference Finals, where it will meet the winner of the other Wild Card Series for a Best-of-5 set to determine who will go to the Frontier League Championship Series, which will begin in mid-September.
