COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri football team will face its first big test of the 2025 season on Saturday, when it hosts South Carolina in a Southeastern Conference game at Faurot Field.

Missouri is coming off three impressive victories to begin the new season, which helped the Tigers earn a spot in the national Top 25 rankings. Mizzou was ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press poll and No. 22 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll.

South Carolina was ranked No. 11 in the country, until it lost last week in its SEC opener against Vanderbilt.

The annual meeting between the Tigers and Gamecocks is called the “Mayor’s Cup” game, with the mayors of Columbia, Mo., and Columbia, S.C., placing their own private wager on which team will win.

Last year, South Carolina won an all-time classic contest between the two teams, which saw Mizzou score a late touchdown to take the lead, only to have the Gamecocks score in the final minute to win the game.

Even with South Carolina’s loss last week that dropped them out of the national Top 25, Mizzou has a chance to make a real statement about what kind of team it is and will be this season. The Tigers have a favorable schedule the rest of the season. So a win on Saturday could set Mizzou up with a chance to make a run at reaching its highest SEC and CFP playoff goals.

Players to Watch: Mizzou’s top players this season have all been new players to the squad. QB Beau Pribula is one of top-rated passers in the country, with 791 yards and seven touchdowns. The newcomer from Penn State also has three rushing touchdowns.

RB Ahmad Hardy, a transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, is coming off a huge day in last week’s win over Louisiana. He ran for 250 yards and scored three touchdowns. And he’ll come into Saturday’s showdown leading the nation in rushing with 462 total yards.

WR Kevin Coleman, Jr., a native St. Louisan who transferred from Mississippi State, leads the Tigers with 24 catches for 258 yards. And LB Josiah Trotter, new at Mizzou from West Virginia, leads Mizzou with 15 tackles and five tackles-for-loss.

The Gamecocks will come to town with huge questions about the availability of QB LaNorris Sellers. The sophomore, who had a breakout season as a freshman last year, left last week’s game early due to a concussion.

The folks at South Carolina have been quiet about his chance to play on Saturday and have him listed as questionable. If Sellers is unable to go, sixth-year senior Luke Doty, who threw for 148 yards, a touchdown, and an interception will get the call.

Junior WR Nyck Harbor leads the Gamecocks in catches and yards, and ranks among the SEC’s best with a 23.6 yards per catch average. LB Dylan Stewart had two sacks in last week’s game, while teammate DQ Smith leads South Carolina with 18 total tackles.
