COLUMBIA, MO — After enjoying a well deserved week off last week, the University of Missouri football team will be back in action on Saturday, with a matchup many are considering one of the biggest in program history — a showdown with big, bad and No. 8-ranked Alabama.

Missouri won its last game, 42-6 over UMass on September 27, while Alabama will come to town fresh off two straight wins over ranked opponents Georgia and Vanderbilt.

Mizzou is 5-0 on the season, with one of the wins being its only Southeastern Conference game, a 29-20 comeback victory over South Carolina. The Tigers have been dominant in their previous five games, ranking fourth overall in the nation in total offense and sixth in total defense.

Many national onlookers are starting to believe Mizzou could be a team to reckon with this season, but the Tigers are going to have to prove it against mighty Alabama.

The Crimson Tide suffered an upset loss in its season opener at Florida State, but since then it has plowed through opponents like most thought they would this season. A win for Bama on Saturday would be the Tide’s third straight over a ranked opponent and would leave no doubt about who the top team in the SEC is this year.

The Tigers have had two weeks to get ready for this matchup and head coach Eli Drinkwitz said he believes his players will be ready.

“Great to be back. Had a great work week last week with the players and the staff,” Drinkwitz said. “Really had three goals we were focused on: sharpening our edge, improvement, and recovery, and now we’re looking forward to moving on to Alabama, which is a really, really good football team and a very difficult test for us.

“I think (Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer) has his team playing at an elite level. Now that his team and culture is really installed, you can see why he’s one of the elite coaches in college football. He’s got great assistants that have really established their identities in all three phases.”

Players to Watch: Mizzou’s running game has been one of the best in the country so far this season. The sophomore 1-2 punch of Ahmad Hardy and Jamal Roberts has been rolling through opponents all season.

Hardy is currently leading the team and nation in rushing, with 730 yards and nine touchdowns. The transfer from Louisiana-Monroe had 130 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers’ win over UMass two weeks ago.

And Roberts has been nearly as good, just with less attempts. The second-year Tiger has 350 yards this year and averages 7.3 yards per carry.

Both players will have to play a major role in Mizzou controlling the ball throughout the game.

If they don’t, the Tigers will turn to quarterback Beau Pribula, who ranks sixth in the SEC with 1,203 passing yards and nine touchdowns.

Alabama’s offense averages 452 yards per game and is led by QB Ty Simpson, who leads the SEC in passing, with 1,478 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Tide’s top receiver this year has been Germie Bernard, who has 25 catches for 392 yards and five touchdowns.

Another top Tide receiver, sophomore Ryan Williams was listed as questionable on this week’s injury report and him playing on Saturday might be a game-time decision.

Up Next: After opening the season with six straight home games, Mizzou will head out for its first road trip of the season next week. The Tigers will trek way down south to take on Auburn.

The league office hasn’t announced yet the game’s official kickoff time. But it did announce the game will begin at either 6 p.m. and be televised on ESPN, or at 6:30 p.m. and be broadcast on the SEC Network.
