ATLANTA, GA — The No. 2-ranked and defending NCAA Division III national champion Washington University women’s soccer team earned its biggest win of the season on Sunday, when it defeated No. 1-ranked Emory University, 2-1, in a UAA league match at that school’s Woodruff PE Center.
WashU scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half, on a rocket shot by Bears senior Grace Ehlert, who found herself open at the top of Emory’s box, after receiving a pass from teammate Madi Foley.
Ehlert buried a blast into the left corner for her 11th goal of the season and a 1-0 WashU lead.
Emory answered with a score in the first minute of the second half to tie the game. That set up a tense final 45 minutes, with both teams having solid scoring chances.
The game-winner though, came in the 81st minute, when WashU’s Olivia Clemons took a pass from goalkeeper Kassidy Lanthier and raced around two Emory defenders to gain enough space to send a long shot into the right corner of the net for her UAA league-leading 14th goal of the season.
From that point on, WashU’s defense took over and wouldn’t allow Emory any more scoring chances. The host Eagles finished with 12 shots, but only three on goal, and none in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Bears are now 15-0-1 on the season (5-0 in UAA play) and remain just one of two unbeaten teams in all of Division III women’s soccer.
When the new United Soccer Coaches national Top 25 poll is released on Tuesday, WashU will almost certainly be the new No. 1 team in the country.
The Bears will play their final two regular season games at home. The first will come on Saturday, November 1, against NYU. Then on November 8, WashU will host Chicago, as part of a Francis Olympic Field tripleheader, along with the men’s soccer team and the football team.
Football will begin the day with a game against North Park at noon. Men’s soccer will follow and play Chicago at 4 p.m., followed by the women’s soccer game at 6:30 p.m.
