COLUMBIA, MO — Six players scored in double figures and the University of Missouri men’s basketball team shot 52% overall and hit 10 three-pointers in a 91-73 win over Prairie View A&M, Monday night at Mizzou Arena.
Missouri is now 5-0 as it begins the new college basketball season, while Prairie View fell to 2-3.
Senior forward Jacob Crews came off the bench and scored 20 points, including a four-for-five night from three-point land to lead the Tigers. Crews also had eight rebounds.
Starters Anthony Robinson, Jevon Porter, Shawn Phillips Jr., and Mark Mitchell also had fine nights. Robinson scored 13 points and added five assists and two steals. Porter, the Columbia, Mo., native, had 12 points — his best game as a Tiger.
Phillips had his second double-double of the season, with 12 points and 13 rebounds. And Mitchell, Mizzou’s leading scorer at 18 points/game, had 10 points and five rebounds.
Jayden Stone, the Tigers’ second-leading scorer, added 12 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
“I’m proud of our guys for getting the victory, proud of our moments that we had,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said. “We had a lot of guys making a lot of plays, grabbing rebounds we needed, getting to loose balls we needed. It was a great effort by our team tonight.”

Prairie View’s only lead of the game came when it scored the first basket of the game, 40 seconds into the game. Mizzou responded by scoring eight straight points — all by Porter, on two three-pointers and a pair of free throws — to go ahead 8-2.
Missouri took control of the game a few minutes later, when it went on a 20-2 run, highlighted by two Crews’ three-pointers and a breakaway slam dunk by Porter, that put the Tigers ahead 33-12.
Mizzou led 49-27 at halftime and never looked back.
“I saw guys being unselfish,” Gates said. “I think our time per possession, meaning individual possession, was minimized and we were able to find the open man.
“Prairie View is a great defensive team that creates havoc and chaos, and it was very seldom that we could run plays or sets because they had a match-up zone in addition to a man-to-man. So they make you think so we just ran our man stuff against that zone and was able to find some creases and some openings and I thought our guys were able to read the game and just play it the right way and get off the basketball and find the next open man.”

The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, November 20, when they’ll host South Dakota. Tip off at Mizzou Arena that evening is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
