SALEM, VA — The Washington University women’s soccer team will play in the NCAA Division III national championship game for the third straight year.
The Bears, who are the defending national champions, earned that right by defeating longtime rival, the University of Chicago, in a national semifinal game, Thursday afternoon at Roanoke College’s Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
The match will go down officially as a draw that went past double overtime and into a penalty kick shootout. And in that session, the Bears outscored the Maroons, 10-9, to claim the match and advance to the national championship game.

The shootout period went 14 rounds, with both teams scoring nine times and missing four times through 13 tries. That set up the final period, where WashU’s Jadyn Aling scored for the Bears, then goalkeeper Kassidy Lanthier made a save for WashU to seal the match.
The Bears stormed the field for high-fives and hugs to celebrate Lanthier’s diving stop. It was Lanthier’s fourth save of the match and second of the shootout period.
No. 1-ranked WashU (20-0-3) will play No. 2 ranked Emory University in the championship match. The teams met earlier this season, with WashU winning 2-1.
The championship match is set for Saturday, December 6 at 11 a.m., when it will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
