COLUMBIA, MO — Grad student senior Jacob Crews hit a season-high six three-pointers and scored a team-high 20 points to lead the University of Missouri men’s basketball team to an 85-77 win over Alabama State, Thursday night at Mizzou Arena.

Crews, who came off the bench in each of Missouri’s first 10 games this season, made seven of the nine shots he took, including six-of-eight from three-point range and grabbed four rebounds.

“I’m grateful for starting, but it didn’t make a difference in how I would play or what effort I would give,” Crews said. “I’m grateful to be able to hear my name called at the beginning and get to have that adrenaline rush from there. But again — I don’t want to take it as a little thing, but I just want to be out there and play, really.”

Gates added, “It matters to him, don’t let him fool you, it matters. He was excited… He heard his name last in that starting lineup and it gave him some real good energy.”

Junior teammate Anthony Robinson, who had struggled some in Mizzou’s previous four games, looked more like himself on Thursday and scored 19 points to go along with five assists and two steals. Robinson made seven of the nine shots he took on Thursday. He had made just seven shots in Mizzou’s previous four games.

“To be honest, I’m really not trying to change anything, just getting back to myself, getting to the free throw line,” Robinson said. “So just always putting pressure on the defense and hunting paint touches, that’s who I am. So the game just gonna come to me.

“I’m not trying to worry about any missed shots or what happened there, what happened on that. Just being aggressive every play. So, that’s what I’m taking away from that. And you know, I’m playing more minutes I did last year, so there’s gonna be ups and downs, but I gotta stay a level-headed to it.”

Missouri led start-to-finish, but didn’t take firm control of the game until it went on a 15-0 run midway through the first half. The Tigers led by as many as 18 points before taking a 52-39 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Alabama State got as close as seven points once and eight points twice, but the Hornets were never really able to challenge the Tigers’ command of the game.

Mark Mitchell, with 15 points, and Sebastian Mack, with 10, were the other Mizzou players to reach double figures, as the Tigers improved their record to 9-2 on the season. Alabama State fell to 3-7.

“Being able to be 9-2 is definitely something that’s exciting for our program,” Gates said. “We would like to be undefeated, but understand you’re not going to win every game. So winning the lessons, being able to understand what you need to continue to get better at is great.

“At the end of the day, people can talk, speak. We had two tough road games. Two tough road games. That does not mean we’re defined by two games. What it means is we gotta get to the drawing board, pull our big boy pants up and figure out the things that hurt us and eliminate it, eradicate it, and get back to our rhythm, get back to defending.”

Mizzou will be back in action on Sunday, when it hosts Bethune-Cookman. Tip off at Mizzou Arena is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on the SEC Network.
