NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team began the new year with perhaps its best performance of the season, in a 93-70 win over Quincy University, Friday night, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the Mark Twain Building.
UMSL shot just under 60 percent overall and 62 percent from three-point range on its way to a 23-point win over the longtime rival Hawks.
The Tritons made 16-of-26 threes and had five players score in double figures, led by junior forward Demetris Phillips, who came off the bench to post team highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman point guard Miles Boland also had a fine night, with 17 points and 13 assists. Vincent Davis, Jake Hamilton, and Quenton Parker were UMSL’s other double-digit scorers, with Davis pouring in 18 points, Hamilton adding 16 points, and Parker chipping in 12.

Quincy entered Friday evening’s contest leading the GLVC in three-point field goal percentage defense (27 percent), but the Tritons came out red hot from three and knocked down six of their first eight attempts.
Despite UMSL’s hot shooting, the Hawks hung with the Tritons in the early going and trailed by just a point through for the first 12 minutes.
That would be the closest Quincy got though, as UMSL finished the opening stanza strong outscoring the Hawks 22-9 in the final eight minutes to take a 48-34 lead into the half.

The second half was all UMSL, as the Tritons outscored the Hawks 45-26. Quincy never got closer than 13 points and UMSL led by as many as 33 points, before emptying its bench and cruising to the victory.
The win lifted UMSL’s overall record to 9-5 and its GLVC mark to 3-2. Quincy, which had won its two previous games, is now 6-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
The Tritons will close out a quick two-game homestand with a GLVC matchup against Upper Iowa on Sunday. Tip off at the Mark Twain Building is slated for 3:15 p.m., and will follow a matchup between the schools’ women’s teams, who will play at 1 p.m.
