COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team got back onto the winning track by defeating Auburn, 84-74, in a Southeastern Conference game, Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena.

The victory was Missouri’s 11th straight in 11 home games this season. The Tigers are 13-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Grad student guard Jayden Stone led the way for the Tigers, scoring 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, with six-of-six from the free-throw line – adding six rebounds and three assists.

Senior forward Mark Mitchell added 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while adding five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Junior forward Trent Pierce came off the bench and notched 18 points on six-of-eight shooting, tying a career-high with five triples in the contest, and adding three assists.

Sophomore point guard T.O. Barrett, who also came off the bench, tallied a career-high 13 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field, and nabbed two steals and three assists.

“Our guys right here, man, to my right and left, they carried us,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said in his postgame press conference, seated between Pierce and Barrett. “That’s what I’m proud of the most, our guys being able to work through whatever they’re working through and bounce back.”

Mizzou got off to a slow start, after missing 10 of its first 11 shots. But then the Tigers got hot, sparked by Pierce, who scored 12 points in the first half, which helped Mizzou grab a 38-34 lead at halftime.

The Tigers took their largest lead when Pierce hit a three midway through the second half to put the home team ahead 54-45. Auburn rallied to within four points in the final minutes, but Stone sank five free throws in the final minutes to put the game away.

Missouri shot 54 percent from the game and made nine three-pointers, while Auburn shot just 40 percent and made just six three-pointers.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, when they’ll travel to Baton Rouge for a road game at LSU. Tip off for that contest is set for 2:30 p.m., and the game will be televised national on the SEC Network.
