COLUMBIA, MO — Mark Mitchell splashed home a game-winning three-pointer as the buzzer sounded in overtime to lift the University of Missouri men’s basketball team to an 88-87 victory over Oklahoma in a Southeastern Conference thriller, Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.

The game was tied with 21.3 seconds left in overtime, when OU took possession and then took the lead on a short, off-balance jumper by Xzavier Brown. Missouri quickly inbounded the ball to Mitchell, who raced upcourt looking for a shot that could possibly tie the game.

With three defenders near him, Mitchell instead pulled up for a three that drained home to give the Tigers the win.

“Honestly man, that was just a blessing from God,” Mitchell said. “You dream to have moments like that. It was a back and forth game. I think, even when I made the shot, I was low-key like, ‘what just happened?’ I was shocked. I’m still in shock.”

So were the Sooners who could barely muster the energy to leave the court, while the entire Mizzou team, its cheerleaders, and a bunch of the 10,852 fans in attendance celebrated MU’s dramatic victory.

Mitchell’s game winner was the second such buzzer beater for the Tigers on the day. Teammate Trent Pierce, who made only one shot in the entire game, hit a three at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime.

Oklahoma was leading by a point with 5.6 seconds left in regulation time, when Tae Davis made two free throws to put the Sooners ahead 81-78. Pierce inbounded the ball the T.O. Barrett, who dribbled the halfcourt, then passed the ball back to Pierce, who was open just beyond the center court logo.

With no hesitation, Pierce fired a 37-foot bomb that banged home to tie the game and sent the Mizzou faithful into a frenzy as the game went to overtime.

“That first buzzer-beater was a draw-up, and our guys executed it,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said. “I had Trent take it out because I knew they would put two guys on the ball. And T.O. was able to do certain things (to draw their attention).”

The overall ballgame was a back-and-forth contest from the start, which featured 15 ties and 24 lead changes. Neither team ever lead by more than six points, which is what OU led by with six minutes left in regulation (70-64).

Mizzou responded with an 8-0 run to go ahead 72-70 with 3:46 to go. The teams traded baskets and the lead down the stretch to set up the end of regulation scenario that set up Pierce’s game-tying three.

“I just tried to stay in open space because we knew they were going to double T.O.,” Pierce said. “As soon as I got it, I knew I was gonna hit it. I just didn’t wanna rush it.”

Before his final game-winner, Mitchell made another key play with 25.6 seconds left, when he found Barrett open under the basket for a layup that tied the game at 85.

OU dribbled to halfcourt and called timeout to set up its final play, which essentially consisted of everyone staying out of Brown’s way as he worked against Mizzou’s Jayden Stone until he found a shot he liked.

Brown made the shot and it looked like OU was going to win, until Mitchell made the final great play of the day and won the game for Mizzou.

“He obviously felt bad about that last play where he was right in front of the basket, missed a shot, etc.,” Gates said. “And good players — great players — have short-term memories. … It was about three guys on him. I saw three hands once Mark took off from the ground, shooting that pull-up 3… I said, ‘this is going in,’ to myself. Knowing him, it was just the confidence to know he wasn’t looking for anybody else and he executed what we needed him to execute.”

The victory lifted Mizzou’s season record to 14-6 and its SEC mark to 4-3, while OU fell to 11-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, when they’ll travel to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 17 Alabama (13-5, 3-2), which is coming off a loss to Tennessee on Saturday. Tuesday’s matchup will tip off at 7 p.m., and will air nationally on the SEC Network.

Mizzou’s next home game will come next Saturday, when the Tigers host Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. That game will also air nationally on the SEC Network.
