NORMANDY, MO — University of Missouri-St. Louis pitcher Eli Cartwright joined an exclusive club on Saturday, when he threw the eighth no-hitter in program history in the Tritons’ 4-0 win over Southwest Baptist University, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the UMSL Baseball Field.
Cartwright, who played two seasons at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa Junior College and two more at Eastern Illinois, before coming to UMSL this season, pitched seven nearly perfect innings, with no runs and no hits allowed, four walks, and a career-best 12 strikeouts.
The Tritons supplied all the runs Cartwright would need when senior first baseman Mitch Bonczkowski smacked his GLVC-leading 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the first to put UMSL up 1-0.

The Tritons added a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to insure a victory. But the star of the day was definitely Cartwright.
The lefthanded fireballer from Oklahoma City walked the very first batter of the game, but got the next three batters out to face no real trouble. He then struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings, before SBU got its next baserunner on in the fifth.
Cartwright worked around that with another struck out and two soft ground balls. SBU went down 1-2-3 in the sixth, which set up the final inning seventh where Cartwright would make history.
He struck out the first batter, but walked the next and saw that runner steal second to put himself into scoring positing. But Cartwright never wavered.
He struck out the next batter looking, leaving him one out away from his first no-hitter since high school.
Then on a 1-1 pitch, Cartwright got SBU’s Beau Honeycutt to ground out to short for the final out in UMSL’s eighth baseball no-hitter ever.

Cartwright is now 5-1 on the season, which is tops on the UMSL team and leads the GLVC in wins. He also leads the GLVC with a 1.91 ERA.
The 4-0 UMSL victory was in the second game of a doubleheader against Southwest Baptist, which won the opener 9-2.
The Tritons are now 14-14 on the season and will look to close out the series with a game against SBU on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
