COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri women’s softball team finished off a rough weekend at home against No. 22 LSU with a 1-0 win on Saturday.
LSU won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 25-5, but on Saturday, Missouri pitcher Cierra Harrison tossed her first complete game shutout in a Southeastern Conference game in more than two seasons, by going all seven innings and giving up no runs on just four hits and two walks. Harrison also strike out three.
The only run of the game scored in the bottom of the third inning, when Mizzou cleanup hitter Abby Hay drilled a two-out single off the glove of LSU shortstop Kylee Edwards, which scored freshman Addy Waits, who began the play on second base.
Harrison made that one run stand up by retiring the side in order in the fourth and fifth — with the help of a smooth double play turned by the Mizzou defense in the fifth. Then, in the sixth, Harrison fielded two line drives right back at her to get LSU out in order again.
In the seventh, the visiting Tigers got runners on, but Mizzou turned another double play — on a line out to Waits at third, who then threw to Hay at first to get the second runner before she could get back.
Harrison got the final out on a grounder to preserve the win.
“It’s huge to be able to bounce back,” Mizzou head coach Larissa Anderson said. ” [When I look at the season], we’ve been very, very competitive⦠The last two games we were not⦠Regardless of a win or loss today, we did what we’re supposed to do.”
The victory on Sunday lifted Mizzou’s overall season record to 21-20 and its SEC mark to 5-7.
The Tigers will be on the road next weekend, when they’ll travel to Athens, Ga., to take on the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs. Mizzou’s next home game will come in two weeks, (April 17-19), when the Tigers host a three-game series against South Carolina.
