INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had three players register two hits apiece and three relief pitchers pitch a combined five shutout innings on its way to a 7-5 extra inning win over the University of Indianapolis, Friday afternoon at Bill Bright Field.
Freshman Bennett Cagle delivered the key blow, when he came in to pinch hit in the top of the 10th inning and smacked an RBI double that broke a 5-5 tie to give UMSL the lead. Teammate Cade Grevengoed then singled to drive in Cagle and put the Tritons up by two.
That was enough for junior Dustin Hagens, who set the host Greyhounds down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to close out the win. Hagens, who got the win, is now 2-1 on the season, after tossing 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball, while allowing UIndy just two hits and one walk, while striking out eight.
Fellow junior Brandon Johnson, who began the game on the mound, fell into some trouble and gave up runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. That’s when UMSL went to the bullpen, where Cale Berkbuegler and Will O’Gorman got key outs to get the Tritons to Hagens, who pitched his longest and best outing of the season.
Hagens has been on quite a roll lately. UMSL has won each of the last 10 games he has appeared in and he’s only given up one run in those 10 appearances.

At the plate, Grevengoed, LJ Randle, and Mitch Bonczkowski each had two hits and an RBI to power the UMSL offense. Grevengoed scored UMSL’s first run, on a second inning single by teammate Justin Simard.
Bonczkowski doubled home a run in the third to give the Tritons the lead, before junior Owen Faith blasted his sixth home run of the season to put UMSL up 4-1. UIndy got a run back in the bottom of the third, but Randle put the Tritons back up by three with an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
The Greyhounds got a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game. Neither team would score again until Cagle’s heroics in the top of the 10th.

The victory lifted UMSL’s season record to 21-17 and its Great Lakes Valley Conference mark to 15-6, which is tied with nationally ranked Illinois-Springfield for third place in the GLVC standings. UIndy fell to 23-16 and 14-7 in the conference.
The Tritons and Greyhounds will play Games 2 and 3 of their series on Saturday. First pitch of the first game of Saturday’s twinbill at Bill Bright Field is set for 11 a.m., and both games will be streamed live on FloSports.com.
