NORMANDY, MO — For most of this season, University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball player Bowen Sandquist has looked like the best three-pointer shooter in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Through 13 games, Sanquist had taken (89) and made (42) more threes than any other player in the GLVC.

But on Saturday, in a matchup at the Mark Twain Building against crosstown rival Maryville University, Sandquist looked like he might just be the best three-point shooter in all of D2 basketball, as he knocked down seven threes — including six in the second half — to lead the No. 4-ranked Tritons to an 88-81 win over the visiting Saints.

Sandquist finished the day with 21 points, all on three-pointers, while teammate Donovan Vickers came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.

Other UMSL reserve players who made big contributions were Janeir Harris, who had 11 points and five rebounds, and Drew Cisse, who scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out six assists.

The Tritons didn’t grab their first significant lead until late in the third quarter, when they went on a 15-4 run to turn an 18-15 deficit into a 30-22 lead. Vickers scored 11 of the 15 points during that run, including a three-pointer that began the UMSL hot stretch and a dazzling spinning layup that ended it.

UMSL led 40-31 at halftime, but Maryville began the second half with a 16-6 run that allowed the Saints to tie the score at 46.

Fortunately for the Tritons, that was when Sandquist got hot. He’d already hit two three-pointers to account for UMSL’s first six points. Then, he hit a third one to give the Tritons a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.

Later in the second half, with Maryville trying to battle back, UMSL went on a 12-4 run to push its lead to 63-53. The Tritons would lead by as many as 14 points, before finally closing out the contest with a seven-point edge.

The victory moved UMSL’s overall record to 13-1 and its GLVC mark to 5-1, which allowed the Tritons to remain in a tie with Quincy for first place in the league standings. Maryville fell to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

UMSL will be on the road for its next three games, beginning with a trip across the river to Lebanon, Ill., for a matchup against McKendree on Thursday, January 12. That contest will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

The Tritons’ next home game will be on Thursday, January 19, when they’ll host a potential first-place showdown against Quincy at the Mark Twain Building.
