ST. LOUIS, MO — After playing through a scoreless first half, the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team scored four times in the second half to earn a 4-0 victory over La Salle, Sunday afternoon at Hermann Stadium.
Emily Gaebe scored twice and teammates Lyndsey Heckel and Hannah Sawyer added a goal apiece, as the No. 24-ranked Billikens won their third straight and moved their unbeaten string to five straight games.
The victory lifted Saint Louis’ overall season record to 7-2-1 and its Atlantic 10 Conference mark to 2-0. La Salle fell to 2-5-2 and 0-1 on the year.
Heckel broke a 0-0 stalemate with a penalty-kick goal in the 49th minute. It was her third goal of the season.
Saint Louis then broke the game open with three goals in a span of less than six minutes, beginning with the first of two by Gaebe in the 69th minute. She now has four goals on the season and broke a string of six straight games without a score — the longest such string of her career.
Sawyer scored her third goal of the season, two minutes later, which set the stage for Gaebe’s second score four minutes after that.
Freshmen Eva Schreiber and Jordan Gary assisted on Gaebe’s first goal and Sawyer’s goal, netting both first-year players the first assists of their college careers.
Billiken goalkeeper Emily Puricelli made three saves and registered her third shutout of the season, second in succession and 32nd of her career. Puricelli tied Hanna Benben for third place on SLU’s career saves list (219).
SLU has outscored its opponents 21-4 in the second half this season.
The Billikens will now enjoy a week off, before returning to the pitch next Sunday, September 24, when they’ll host another A-10 opponent in Dayton at Hermann Stadium. That contest will kickoff at 1 p.m.
